Build a balanced Likert scale

A Likert item presents a statement or question with ordered response options. A balanced scale provides the same number of positive and negative positions around a neutral midpoint, with labels that describe one consistent concept.

Use agreement labels for an agreement statement, frequency labels for a frequency question, and satisfaction labels for satisfaction. Mixing constructs makes the result harder to interpret.

Five points or seven points?

• Five-point scales are compact, familiar, and easier to complete on small screens.
• Seven-point scales provide two additional levels of nuance when respondents can meaningfully distinguish them.
• Keep the same scale across a tracking study so changes reflect customers rather than a changed response format.

Write the question before choosing the labels

Avoid double-barrelled statements such as “delivery was fast and packaging was sustainable.” Ask one thing at a time, use plain language, and include a “not applicable” option outside the numbered scale when some respondents cannot answer.
