A random winner generator for clean entrant lists

Paste one name or handle per line, or a comma-separated list. The picker removes case-only duplicates, draws winners and ordered backups without replacement, and keeps the list inside your browser. Afterwards you can copy a plain-text draw record or download a result image showing the winners, the entrant count, and the time of the draw.

It works the same whether you call it a winner picker, a winner generator, a giveaway selector, or a name chooser. What matters is the list you feed it: one line per eligible entrant, finalised before you draw.

Contests, competitions, raffles, and giveaways

The mechanics are identical across all four. Somebody enters, entries close, one or more entrants are chosen at random, and the result gets announced. The words differ mostly by country and by prize.

Where they genuinely differ is the paperwork. A prize draw that requires a purchase, or one that awards a high-value prize, can attract rules that a casual giveaway does not. Check what applies where your entrants live before you publish, rather than after somebody complains.

• Raffle: entrants usually hold a numbered ticket, so paste the ticket numbers or the names against them.
• Competition: often judged on merit somewhere, which is not a random draw. Use this picker only for the parts that genuinely are random.
• Contest and giveaway: interchangeable in practice, and both are a straight random draw from an eligible list.

Create an auditable winner process

• Freeze the eligible list after the published closing time and before drawing.
• Record the rules, entrant count, date and time of selection, winners, alternates, and any redraw reason.
• Contact the selected person privately and verify eligibility before making a public announcement.
• Keep the draw record with the entrant list, so the two can be checked against each other later.

Always draw backups at the same time

The most common way a giveaway goes wrong is not a rigged draw, it is a winner who never replies. If you go back and draw again a week later, you have effectively run a second, undocumented draw, and anybody watching has to take your word for it.

Drawing backups in the same pass solves that. Set a backup count before you draw, and the picker produces an ordered list alongside the winners. If your first choice is unreachable or turns out to be ineligible, you promote the next backup and note why in the record. The order was fixed before you knew you would need it.

Random is not the same as weighted

Every unique line in this picker has one equal chance. If your rules award bonus entries for referrals or actions, calculate and preserve those weights in your contest system rather than pasting the same name repeatedly into an undocumented draw.

Pasting a name five times does technically give it five chances, but nothing about the resulting record shows why, which defeats the point of having a record at all.
