Why people export Instagram comments

• Freezing an entrant list at the moment a giveaway closes, before comments start disappearing.
• Keeping a record of who entered, to file alongside your published rules and your draw result.

The visible count is not the export count

The number on the post and the number of comments that can be retrieved are rarely identical. Comments get deleted. Some are hidden by Instagram's own filters. Accounts go private or are removed. Any of that happens between the moment you read the count and the moment the import runs.

So treat the preview count as a size estimate for pricing, and the imported count as the real one. The app shows you what it actually retrieved, and how many unique handles are inside it, which is usually the number you care about.

Handle exported comments carefully

An exported comment list is personal data about real people, even though they posted publicly. Keep it only as long as your promotion needs it, store it somewhere your team controls, and say in your rules what you will do with entrant information.

If your rules promise that entrant data is used only to run the promotion, then using the export for unrelated marketing later is a promise broken. That is a rules problem rather than a technical one, and it is worth getting right before entries open.
